6.7 | Policy on Major and Minor
6.7.1 | Policy Background and Purposes

Degree requirements are the purview of the faculty. The awarding of degrees is based on the successful completion of requirements created by them in their governance roles at the University and Faculty level.

Achievement of the bachelor’s degree is based on completing a broad distribution of courses across representative fields in the arts and sciences as well as a focused study in at least one field. The purpose of the broad distribution, accomplished by fulfilling Sampoerna University’s general education core requirements, is designed to provide students with contemporary, relevant skills and with a wide-ranging perspective on a rapidly changing world. The focused study is achieved by completing a major in at least one academic program. Completing a major gives student an opportunity to acquire competence in a particular field of scholarship.

Collectively, these requirements are designed to promote breadth of knowledge, an understanding of the complexity of the world, and an appreciation for lifelong learning. Sampoerna University seeks to develop skills in critical thinking, effective communication, ethical reasoning, global learning, information literacy and quantitative literacy. The University has identified these competencies as critical for personal growth and imperative for academic and professional success after graduation. While these competencies are developed across the curriculum, they are the explicit focus of the general education core curriculum.
